This musical presentation of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale, will delight and be understood by everyone. Strong elements of love, loyalty and fear, which underpin the 30 minute work, are offset by many lighter moments of joy, play and high spirits.
The story of the one-legged tin soldier, his love for the dancer, his relationship with his fellow toys, the little boy, and his journey in a little paper boat to an amazing conclusion, are all brought vividly to life by Keith Amos and Richard Baker.

PERFORMANCES
The world première was given by Nicola Meecham (piano) and Richard Baker at the Danish Embassy, Dec 1993 and the symphonic version by the BBC Philharmonic two weeks later, this was later transmitted on BBC Radio 3 on Boxing Day that year.
There have since been many performances which include the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Shreveport Symphony Orchestra, Hamburg SO, Malmo SO, Heidelburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Swedish Royal Navy Band and the Royal Artillery Band, Tenerife Municiple Band, Haags Symfonie Orkest.
UK narrators have included: Richard Baker, Aled Jones, Humphrey Carpenter, Dennis Quilley, Penelope Keith, Susan Sharpe, Angela Rippon.

The highlight of the concert was the North American première of the English composer Keith Amos' The Steadfast Tin Soldier, a piece concertgoers will doubtless hear again and again.

Amos, who was in attendance for the première, set the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale to music and came up with a delightful and touching work that is filled with melody and, on occasion, drama. The work's two primary themes - that of the tin soldier and the ballerina - are not only hummable but linger in the mind. Trumpeter Rick Rowell did well with the recurring, march-like soldier theme, while piccolo player, Arthur Williams, caught the wistful loveliness of the ballerina theme. The ballerina theme is expanded for the piece's beautiful and effective finale. The sentimental in the audience probably shed a tear or two.

The Steadfast Tin Soldier comes with narration, which was neatly handled by Jim Montgomery, editor of the Jounalpage. Montgomery is musically inclined, which helps, and his acting background added dramatic impetus to the number.

One hopes The Steadfast Tin Soldier will soon be available in recordings, since it is premièring worldwide. I'd frankly like to have one by the local orchestra. The musicians did themselves proud.
